FRankie G!
The DJ Culture has always been a part of my life. When I was a kid, my Uncle and Sister would have parties at our house. I remember standing behind the DJ booth, handing the DJ his next record. I was completely fascinated by what was going on. Everything from the awesome bass of the Cerwin Vega Speakers, the lights and fader of the Numark mixer, and the Dance music making people shake their ass. It was like crowd control. The DJ was one of the main reasons they had a good time and danced all night. I was hooked. I was exposed to all Genres of Dance music at an early age. Everything from TAPPS to Run DMC (and everything in between). Music was, and still is, what feeds my Soul.
I remember writing all over my portable record player with a permanent marker. Things like “FRESH” or “DJ” or “DISCO”. In my mind, I was cool. Haha!
In Junior high, a few friends decided to start DJing parties. I was lucky enough to have extremely talented DJ’s around me who helped me take it to another level. I give credit to DJ Michael Insane for being a huge influence with DJing, or "Mixology", as I like to call it.
In the mid to late 90’s, a group of friends and I started a Radio Show called Area 51 on a small San Fernando Valley Based radio station called Frequency 104.7. DJ Chunky was the on-air personality, while DJ Ubee, DJ Luis A, DJ Vagabundo, and I (Frankie G) mixed live on the air. We never played pre-recorded mixes. Everything was 100% LIVE. Even if we made mistakes, which fortunately, was few and far between. We had a following from Los Angeles to Lancaster (although we had many reports of people as far as Ventura County to San Diego County listening to our show). The show was a hit. The format leaned towards Club & Party Music. Everything from House (Deep & Progressive), Trance, Old School, Freestyle, & Rock En Espanol.
I also need to give credit to DJ Ubee, DJ Luis A, and DJ Vagabundo for setting the bar high, and helping me become better than I was. One thing I learned from these guys was that "Anyone can mix, but it takes skills to blend the music". I think that being around such talented DJ's, I was able to take my mixing to the next level. My goal with every mix is to blend the music. Being able to put together a DJ Set that is blended so well, WITHOUT using some kind of software, is truly an art. I try to get as close to that as possible with every mix.
My first set of Turntables were a set of mis-matched Technics belt drive turntables. This was back in the 90's. They were cheap, and difficult to mix on. But after many hours of practice, I was able to beat match, and mix without problems. So when I finally purchased a set of Technics 1200 MK2's, I was able to mix a lot easier. Unfortunately, I sold my Technics 1200's back in 2005. This is something that I regret to this day. About 5 years ago, I purchased a set of Numark V7 Controllers, and a Denon Mixer. This is when I started mixing on Serato Itch (Currently Serato DJ). I currently mix on a Numark NS7iii Controller using Serato DJ.
Well, it’s 2016, and we are back together. Doing what we love to do. We are real DJ's doing what real DJ's do. None of this, computer generated mixes, and press play, crap.
Hope you enjoy our mixes.
